ISO Training - Implementing an ISO Management System

One of the most commonly received enquiries is for those who wish to receive training on Implementing a Management System. It is highly recommended that any organisation wishing to implement an ISO Management System has internal resources trained to assist them in understanding the requirements of the ISO Management System and that internally, there is a degree of capability to manage and maintain the ISO Management System.

There are certain considerations when seeking to select the most appropriate training course in addition to factoring in an organisation's budget. Of publicly available training courses, the most appropriate course for an individual who would be a project lead, thereby a nominated individual who will lead the co-ordination of activities internally with the project, namely a Quality Manager (in the case of ISO 9001) and will also on a day-to-day basis be responsible for leading and managing related activities, would be an IRCA or RAB QSA International Certified Auditor/Lead Auditor Training Course.

Auditor/Lead Auditor Training is not designed with implementation as its core focus and this needs to be clearly stated. However, when all factors are considered, the Auditor/Lead Auditor Training Course is a solid and very beneficial starting point. Why? Well permit us to explain.

Auditor/Lead Auditor Training is generally available publicly on an individual basis representing an obtainable and cost-effective means of obtaining training on a given standard and auditing skills. This is when one compares the costs associated with in-house training and contracting an ISO Consultant for a full implementation project. This training does not remove the need for ‘external' assistance, if internal knowledge is not available, but it will reduce the degree and level of external assistance required. A firm is also making a responsible investment in the on-going maintenance and management of the ISO Management System once it is implemented.

Further to the subject of Auditor/Lead Auditor Training, where the course is IRCA and/or RAB QSA International certified, a delegate attending will obtain:

· A comprehensive foundation on the ISO Standard (i.e ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, etc)

· Receive training on a full auditing skill set including - Gap Analysis, Internal (1st Party), Supplier (2nd Party) and External (3rd Party) - this is a skill set that will assist internally with the management review, internal audit program and with further expansion, a skill set to assess the supply-chain.

· As part of the Lead Auditor Training, one will also receive a solid insight into the Two-Stage Initial Certification Process which an organisation will be subject to in seeking external certification from a recognised notable Accredited Body

For many small organisations who may have little or no prior experience of ISO Management Systems, attending this training which is open to the public, will remove a lot of uncertainty and instead replace that with comprehensive knowledge on the basis of the ISO Management System, its requirements, a skill set to assist you manage and maintain that system, and by default, give solid in-sight into implementation of that Management System. And whilst factors vary from individual to individual and organisation to organisation, the completion of this training may reduce dependence on ‘external' assistance - and as a result - may reduce the costs with implementation and maintenance.

For larger organisations, they can consider a tailored in-house solution for a team of 5-10 individuals who will form the ‘Implementation Team or Committee'. In-House solutions offer great flexibility and true organisational focus as they can be tailored to the specific needs of the client - delivered in a means that suits the organisation and in a time structure that suits the organisation. The needs of the individual organisation will determine the length of the training program which in turn will determine the costs. However, these costs will be notably higher versus an individual attending a public training course.

The FDA and ISO 22000

The Food & Drug Administration is moving towards requesting ISO 22000 as a prerequisite for FDA registration. It is requesting comments on the use of third-party certification programs for foods and feeds, including pet foods. An increasing number of firms that sell foods to the public, such as retailers and food service providers, are requesting that their suppliers become certified as meeting food safety and quality standards as a condition of doing business. FDA seeks more information on the existence and use of these programs to better understand how they can help to ensure that food products are safe and meet FDA requirements.

Kelmac Group & US AID in Afghanistan

For Afghanistan to compete and succeed in today's global market, traders, producers and suppliers must not only find a buyer for their products, but also must ensure that their products meet the importing country's quality and safety requirements, as well as the customers' expectations. This also applies for products and services for Afghanistan's domestic market. There are many technical challenges facing Afghan exports. In the country's quest to increase export trade, specifically to markets outside the South Asian region, there is a general lack of technical capacity here in Afghanistan.

The implementation of international quality standards and certification programs such as ISO 9001 by domestic producers will open new markets for Afghan SME's. To have credibility, accredited certification needs competent auditors. To be efficient and competitive, business needs competent auditors. The purpose of a Quality Management Systems (QMS) auditor certification program is to provide confidence to business that auditors that are trained and certified in accordance with requirements of the International Registrar of Certified Auditors (IRCA) to ensure that they are competent and their conduct is in accordance with international standards. IRCA is the world's largest and original certification body for quality management systems. Headquartered in the United Kingdom, IRCA has certified over 40,000 auditors in 150 countries.

The USAID Afghan Small and Medium Enterprise Development Project (ASMED) implemented by Development Alternatives' Inc. (DAI) took the first steps to identify local technical specialists that have the basic education, knowledge and experience to become certified auditors. In June 2011, an international technical expert in the field if quality, standards and certification conducted an initial program to select and introduce the concept of a certified auditor program in Afghanistan. The overall program includes providing formal training to the selected local technical specialist; this will prepare them to apply for IRCA international auditor certification. IRCA is the international organization that specializes in certifying local technical specialists to achieve certification that is recognized worldwide.

Nineteen local technical specialists were identified by ASMED to participate in this training initiative, they are from various SME's such as food processing, building and construction, service and consulting including five technical specialists from the Afghan National Standards Authority (ANSA).

ASMED chose to work with Kelmac Group® as the IRCA Accredited Training Provider for this project. Kelmac Group® has been accredited with IRCA since 1996 and has been successfully delivering their range of IRCA certified courses in over 40 countries around the world. Kelmac Group® was privileged to have been selected for this project which enjoyed unprecedented success in which will be a series of new Quality Initiatives as Afghanistan rebuilds for a bright future.

Commenting on this first Internationally Certified QMS Auditor Training Program for Afghanistan, Mr. Ed Nemeroff, Project coordinator of the USAID Quality Initiative in Afghanistan, states "Implementing a long-term strategic plan for the development of a National Quality Infrastructure is essential for Afghanistan's economic growth; having qualified certified Quality Management System auditors is a major step in achieving this goal.
